Green Insulation Options

green cellulose insulation

Making your home more energy efficient is the single most eco-friendly improvement that you can do. Why not start with your insulation. Whether you already have standard fiberglass insulation or not, there are now "green" insulation options that are healthier for you, are little to no impact on the environment, and often times work better than traditional fiberglass solutions.

We've broken down some of the more popular green insulation options and list the pros and cons of each.

Cellulose Insulation
Pros: Healthier than fiberglass
Cons: Expensive, may sag and create gaps, can attract moisture, chemicals are used to make it fire retardant but still flammable.

Denim Insulation
Pros: Safe, easy to install
Cons: Expensive, not completely fire resistant

Wool Insulation
Pros: Sustainable and natural. Flame resistant.
Cons: Susceptible to insect damage but typically treated with Boron (non-carcinogenic) to counteract insects

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)
Pros: Extremely air-tight and well insulated
Cons: Only available for a new build as these are a type of wall structure that must be installed at build and allow for almost no post-build remodeling.
