Great Weekend Read for DIY Diehards

sheetrock-shellac.jpg

Taunton Press not only produces great home improvement books and magazines but their website is a tremendous resource as well. Unfortunately the majority of the content on the Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking websites are only available to online members. But their blogs also contain great content that is free, we only wish they'd post more often.

The editor of Fine Homebuilding, Kevin Ireton, contributes to his own blog and reviews the new book by David Owen, Sheetrock & Shellac - A Thinking Person's Guide to the Art and Science of Home Improvement. It sounds like an interesting and humorous read that brings a touch of lightheartedness to what can be a world of heart-ache when it comes to home renovation. As Kevin puts it "If, like me, you're addicted to working on your house, but sometimes think you need a 12-step program to help you get over it, you should read this book. It provides some welcome reassurance"

Real Estate Agents and Their Dogs

Most of the real estate news we've been sharing has been negative so we thought we'd lighten the mood with a profile of the realtor and dog relationship which is much more complicated than you realize.

Me-&-Enzo-headshot.jpg
Of course this is a farce but this agent does a great job selling it.
"Everyone knows two heads are better than one, and in real estate, it's especially true that
two species are better than one."

buster.jpg
The dog in glasses theme is really growing on us. You'd buy a house from Buster wouldn't you?

topdogs.jpg
It's one thing to take photos with your dog but this training agency will teach you "How to Run with the Big Dogs" and it looks like you may even become a dog.

chester.jpg
This dog (Chester) gives real estate advice that is of course, dog-gone good.

dogs.jpg
This real estate agent's photo is sans agent. I guess those Yorkies are so darn cute you wouldn't remember what the looked like anyway.

burro.jpg
To prove that realtors aren't biased against other animals this agent shares her burro with us.

If you can't get enough of the dog/realtor partnership then get it all-in-one with this cute figurine that you can take with you anywhere.

Don't Procrastinate, Insulate!

pink-insulation.jpg

The fastest way to save energy and money is to properly insulate your home. Seal all drafts around your doors and windows and to maximize your insulation efforts check along worn floorboards and in the attic for areas that cold air may enter the house. You can hire an HVAC professional to do an energy audit on your house and they'll most likely use an infrared thermal meter that can detect missing insulation as well as hidden moisture.

Recycling Slate Rooftop Tiles for Flooring

slate-roof-1.jpg

From the Building a timberframe home from scratch blog we've found a great posting of how they used scraps and leftovers from their slate roof installation to tile their bathroom and sunroom. With the help of a wet saw they were on their way. This is a great example of finding alternative uses for building materials.

Add a Bathroom for a Bump in Home Value

faucet-bathroom.jpg

According to CNN Money the renovation that adds instant value to your home is a bathroom - up to 20% more value. An extra bathroom or half-bath (sink and toilet) also improves your quality of life and there are almost always no regrets when it comes to addition like this.
