Just because your thumb isn't green you shouldn't be scared of owning and caring for house plants. The trade off for the little care that these plants need is in your favor and soon you may find yourself planting your own garden!

Lowes has a list of beginner friendly house plants that are "low maintenance" but will brighten your environment.

I've always been keen of the most self-sufficient plant, the cactus. Martha Stewart has a great mini-cacti collection that we covet and is the easiest collection we could start.
