10 Mattress Buying Tips

We're constantly bombarded with commercials and print ads about how important a good night's sleep is. Since our mattresses are with us for ten years or more, it's worth a little research so we can all cash in on that good night of sleep.

This top 10 list for selecting the right new mattress gives some details regarding pillow top, plush and firm mattresses. Some of the tips seem obvious, but others are helpful to remember. There's no point in rushing into anything. Happy hunting.

  • OK, guess I'll have to build that guest room, then, eh? I was hoping some company had found away around the smell. Thanks.
  • Keep searching and if you find something post it here. I've also read differing reports that the smell is from the plastic used to wrap the mattress but it looks like it's typically the foam that is treated with flame retardant.
  • The typical smell is because of the fire retardants used to treat the mattress after it is manufactured. This is a must practice in US.

  • From what I've heard there isn't much you can do besides letting the mattress air out in a guest room while you sleep on your old mattress. Or else you can put multiple sheets over it and makes sure the room is well ventilated.
  • What is the best way to get rid of or to avoid that horrible factory smell that comes on mattresses and takes forever to outgas?
