If you don't have the time or intention of going through this process there are easier options for installing crown molding such as using Easy Crown Molding. According to their website you just peel and stick.
Obviously your choices are much more limited and we don't have a hands-on sample but for crown molding as opposed to baseboard molding, durability isn't an issue. For instant character these are worth a shot.
