Ask the Architect

ask-architect-washington-dc.jpg

We were recently introduced to a new website and blog called AsktheArchitect.org which is run by Washington D.C. based architect/contractor, Bruce Wentworth. He has some great profiles of house styles that are common in the D.C. area and does answer some interesting questions regarding how these older style homes can be remodeled.

His blog only has a few entries but we will be keeping an eye on it as he covers some great home improvement subjects from a professionals point of view.

Here's a bit about Bruce.

Architect/Contractor/Author, Bruce Wentworth, AIA, is a long-term District resident who currently lives in one of the city's Northwest neighborhoods. Over the course of a 25-year professional career, Wentworth has been the principal architect on over 100 historic and classic home restoration/remodels aimed at preserving the architectural character of the District's many diverse neighborhoods.

    Hello.

I have two poles in the middle of my garage that makes pulling into the garage and opening car doors difficult. I would like to replace the beam with a longer beam. Do you have any info regarding this with distance that would be required and how this would be done?

The ceiling is quite high so the thickness of the beam is no problem. I would be ok with just moving the poles as far as possible to not be in line with the car doors. I am not sure how you would shore up the area while building for the new beam replacement.

Any assistance or guidance would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Larry
