Setup Your own Water Supply with a Rain Barrel

rain-barrel.jpg

One of our favorite new home blogs is This Young House and their recent rain barrel project shows step-by-step how to find the barrel, make the spout, and position it properly in your yard.

If you don't have the time or inclination to monitor a rain barrel then you could also consider a drywell which will keep water away from your home's foundation as well as prevent erosion.

There are also greywater systems that will cleanse your drain water as well as make use of rain water that has been collected. All in the name of conserving one of our most vital resources, water!

  • We have no hose access in NYC so rain barrels are the only way I can easily water my garden (Mother Nature does a good job too). Hurrah for the barrel! Actually I don't have a barrel, I just have random buckets, but they work...
  • I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

  • Thanks for checking us out!
  • Great idea! Its been raining really good over the past month or two here in Southern California so Ive been collecting my rain in a few trashcans. Even in L.A . they fill up quick! I use them for watering all our flowers. It should last quite a long time.
