Water Heaters, Refrigerators, Washers, can all be Recycled!!!

Don't let your large appliances end up in a landfill. In fact its now illegal to dump appliances in more than 20 states. Older appliances typically contain a tremendous amount of steel, especially a water heater.

If you are unsure about where your local recycling centers are, start by contacting your refuse and sanitation company. Even if they don't offer recycling programs they should be able to point you in the proper direction for finding where to deposit your appliances. You can also search the database of the Steel Recycling Institute and OurEarth.org for recycling centers near you.

The EPA Energy Star program is also a good resource for helping you determine how to recycle your appliances.

I see these things on the curb all the time and often the scrap metal guys will pick them up. Not sure where they go after that, though. Are parts recycled??
  • Yes, the steel in these water heaters is very valuable and shouldn't go to waste in landfills.
