Will a Bidet Replace Your Toilet?

bidet-toilet-bathroom.jpg

While the bidet has long been a standard of hygiene in Europe, it has only recently begun to trickle over to America, where it is beginning to be the latest and greatest trend in bathrooms across the country.

While the bidet has been in America since the 1960s, when it is widely believed to have been introduced by Arnold Cohen, the bidet has recently gone high-tech.

To use a traditional bidet, a person straddles a toilet-shaped apparatus as faucets spray water in front and behind while the user wipes with the hands, cleaning the exterior of the body. The new tech gadgets being introduced in America are attached to regular toilets and are made by brands including American Bidet, BioBidet, Brondell, Coco, Koehler and Toto, and range in price from $500 to $1,300. They feature everything from self-cleaning bowls to heated water and adjustable faucets to air dryers and deodorizers and other conveniences.

Proponents of bidets claim that they are more eco-friendly. Although many still use toilet paper after using the bidet, they say they use less, and wash their hands just as they would after wiping with toilet paper. In addition, bidets are said to also reduce water consumption, as people spend less time getting clean in the shower.

The new American bidet can be a space-saving way to introduce a touch of Europe into your bathroom, without having the side by side appearance of toilet and bidet.

  • A hand held bathroom bidet sprayer is so much better than a stand alone bidet or bidet seat and this is why:1. It's less expensive (potentially allot less) 2. You can install in yourself = no plumber expense 3. It works better by providing more control of where the water spray goes and a greater volume of water flow. 4. It requires no electricity and there are few things that can go wrong with it. 5. It doesn't take up any more space, many bathrooms don't have room for a stand alone bidet. 6. You don’t have to get up and move from the toilet to the bidet which can be rather awkward at times to say the least. • You hit the nail right on the head! It's about time for bidets in the good old USA... what took so long. Great article!

We have a Brondell swash 800 in our bathroom - probably for about 2 years now and I would not consider going without this type of product again! Once you wash with water you wonder how you ever went so long using paper to clean yourself - yuck! I highly recommend the Brondell brand - great reputation, customer support, and you can buy direct from them.
  • We have the inteligente bidet in Portugal

The best addition ever to my home was a urinal. I never have to remember to put the toilet seat down and the morning accuracy aim isn't a concern. Read about it, all the NBA players are adding them.
  • Gustav, I was thinking the same thing initially. The article is referring to retrofit-like apparatuses and new style toilets that allow a regular toilet to also function as a bidet. Most american homes don't have room for a bidet in the bathroom therefore a combo unit is the only way to go.

You right however the the bidet functions do not replace the toilet functions.
  • Sorry about the confusion - Greg is correct.

We know bidets have a completely different function than toilets but we wanted to highlight the fact that for American bathrooms that are typically built with room for one toilet there are hybrid devices available that combine functions of both.
  • Attention, bewildered Yankees, bidets are not replacements for toilets!
