Could you go two weeks without a toilet? That's what many New Yorkers face when renovating their apartments and I'm sure you can feel their pain when your kitchen is wrapped or your hallways are torn up.

We noticed a new reality show on the DIY Network that focuses on a family trying to live in their home during the renovation and the trials and tribulations that follow.

If staying in a hotel isn't an option, what have you down to keep your sanity while doing a renovation? Let us know in the comments.

When we redid our kitche, we did our own work. We had to set specific hours to work within. At 9 pm, no matter where we were in the process, we stopped. Then we sat on the couch and enjoyed a snack together. It was back to work, the next day. Our kitchen was done in just a few weeks, and we didn't even take vacation time!

Planning is key so that you know where the nearest bathroom is, where you can find air conditioning, etc. I used to frequent our local Panera during our bathroom renovation. The other tip is to always have one room or part of the house that is off limits to the contractors and looks neat and clean. When the going gets tough, hide in there!

Take it one day at a time and make sure your contractors keep decent hours for your sanity.
