Rust-Oleum Targets the DIY & Design Crowd with their Kitchen Transformations

    casa-sugar-julia.jpg

I recently joined a select group of media in hands-on testing Rust-Oleum's new cabinet and countertop transformation kits which they feel is going to revolutionize the DIY segment of the market. This event was held at Latrobes, a very unique event space (formerly a bank) in the center of the French Quarter in New Orleans and you couldn't have wished for a more inspiring place to test paint and product.

Rust-Oleum is long known for their specialty paint products and cleaners but they've taken a dramatic step in the DIY and design direction with these new kitchen makeover kits. They've lowered the barriers to cost and skill required to do a surface renovation on a kitchen which typically involves painting cabinets and replacing countertops.

I'll break down each kit in upcoming articles and if a newly resurfaced countertop for $250 and cabinets for $150 sound appealing to you then you'll want to check back on our reviews of the process and product.

It was great to hear feedback from everyone in attendance and going through the accelerated process of transforming a cabinet face and countertop was of tremendous value. I honestly feel that most people could do this over a weekend no matter what level of DIY skill they have.

I love the kitchen. It's always been a dream of mine to do a kitchen renovation by myself. However, with the busy work schedule I always had to postpone the plan.

Great job. I also tried to paint my kitchen counter tops and cabinets. But i didn't remove silicone over kitchen counter tops.

All I see here are posts by the company, does anyone else have any comments on this product? It seems expensive and I want to know if it's worth it.

I just recently (4/1/11) used the RustOleum countertop Transformations in Java Stone. I watched the instruction video, studied the instruction booklet and watched more demos on youtube before starting my project.
      Also, I am a seasoned DIY'er.

The pros: The finish seems really durable after curing. The color/pattern was very rich looking.

The cons: Hard to get a "perfect" even base coat on the first time, especially if you have longer runs of countertop like I did. And I had a helper too!

BEWARE: If you don't get the base adhesive coat on perfectly, and I mean absolutely perfectly the first time around, the repair/touchup process used per the instructions is going to show up in your final finish. If you over-sand or accidentally touch against the edge or have a thin area that needs re-touching after sanding, it will show up as a splotch in your finish. Perhaps this is an issue with the Java Stone color, I don't know without more input here from other users of other colors. I just know, I was very disappointed with the product results. The good thing was that RustOleum gives a Satisfaction Guarantee! Yes, they even honor their guarantee. I just emailed them with my reason for dissatisfaction and a copy of my purchase receipt and within 48 hours they had approved a refund and say the check will be received in 7-10 days. At least their customer service is something to rave about, if not the product.

Thanks for the thorough run down and we appreciate you sharing your experience. Are those dull marks from over sanding?

MJ - For a quick and easy solution to refinishing cabinets or changing the look of a countertop, these seem to be a great option for the price. Consider what you would pay otherwise.

These kits have only been on shelves for a couple months but we've heard great feedback. We'd also like to hear from anyone who has done their kitchen using these kits.
