FLASH - Federal Alliance for Safe Homes

flash.jpg

There is a not so new organization called FLASH that has partnered with Bob Vila to create an interactive home map that can help you identify the parts of your home that are susceptible to natural disasters.

FLASH mission statement
To partner with like-minded organizations from the public, private and non-profit sector; to demonstrate leadership through creation of useful and reliable disaster safety education programs; and to sponsor ongoing outreach initiatives to encourage citizens to build, buy and use buildings that are constructed or retrofitted with disaster safety in mind.

This sounds a bit like FEMA to us but with a focus on education and more pro-active with seeking partnerships from the public and private sector.

Home Dopey

homedepot.jpg

We had to mention the biggest story/scandal to hit the DIY industry since, Bob Vila left This Old House.

A few vanities that were purchased from various Home Depots in Massachusetts have been found to contain copious amounts of ganja as well as 3 grams of cocaine.

The surge in bathroom renovations has been answered.

Stone Walls

stonefront.jpg

The use of decorative stone can provide your modern home with a more rustic and earthy feel. This look can be created by placing stone on just one exterior wall. Beware of doing too much or your house could resemble a castle.

Consider stone for interior walls as well. Stone is often time used for fireplace surrounds but consider decorative stone walls for entryways and bases of built-in window seats.

Countertop Materials

granitecountertops.jpg

When remodeling a kitchen or bath one of the primary choices that will effect price and appearance is selecting your countertop material. You should consider a number of factors before making a decision, such as; expected wear-and-tear, do you cook a lot?; maintenance and cleanliness, do you keep your current countertops clean and would you seal a natural stone top on a regular basis; and the cost of labor and materials.

The following links should help you with your choice.
