Cosmetic Kitchen Makeovers

kitchen-cosmetic-makeover.jpg

Kitchen remodels don't necessarily require a change to your kitchen layout. Many times it is nice to redirect traffic or expand within a kitchen but if you are happy with your current kitchen plan you probably just need a cosmetic kitchen makeover.

The cosmetic makeover leaves the layout unchanged but involves replacing surfaces. Countertops, cabinets, floors and walls can all be changed and upgraded for a dramatic effect. Just changing out kitchen hardware and retrimming windows or adding a backsplash will make a difference.

This is an easy way to get creative and without spending a huge amount and the results come quickly.

How Much Paint Do You Need?

calculating-paint-room.jpgBefore painting a room or a wall you need to determine how much paint you will need. We always go with just a bit more as it's always frustrating to return to the hardware store for more paint that you hope they still have or that they are still open in the middle of the night when you finish your project. It's also handy to have a little extra paint to cover drywall patches or nail holes.

1. Measure the length of the wall in feet.

2. Measure the height of the wall in feet.

3. Multiply the length times the height to get the square footage of wall area.

A gallon of paint will cover roughly 400 square feet. Make note that if you need two coats then double the amount of paint needed.

House Blog Highlight: A House By The Park

seattle-houseblog.jpg

Seattle, one of our favorite (and we feel most underrated) cities in the world, has an enormous amount of interesting homes and a plethora of DIY resources. From luxury houseboats to modern and modest bungalows there are homes of every taste and many are gorgeous and green.

There also plenty of house bloggers in Seattle that chronicle their home improvement projects or builds and one of the most compelling to read and look at is A House By The Park. The homeowner is building his dream home 10 minutes from Seattle and in his words is "sustainable, energy-efficient, capturing the full potential of the property without spending an arm and a leg."

We love the live web cam and the time lapse feature is fun to look through. The live cams we had setup at This Old House were always the most popular house project feature and its great to see a house blogger implement the same.

Time to Divorce Rent-A-Husband

rent-a-husband.jpg

Strange enough we've never heard of Rent-A-Husband but apparently the man behind the business, Kaile Warren, has been featured in numerous mainstream media outlets such as CBS' Early Show and Parade magazine, among others.

Mr. Warren has gone on to write home improvement books as well as franchise his rent-a-husband concept that according to his website vows "Quality, Respect, Honesty, Professionalism, and Humor." Looks like he's struck out on most of those but we're not sure about the humor, although nobody seems to be laughing.

Kaile Warren is now facing three felony charges, including securities fraud and theft by deception for swindling upwards of 50 investors into investing in his company.

A grand jury in Maine indicted him on Friday and he faces up to 20 years in prison.

Has anyone crossed paths with Kaile? I'm sure he's very amicable in person as most alleged white collar crooks are.

With the economy in it's current state keep vigilant for deals that sound to good to be true and make sure you do your due diligence.
