BidForMaterials.com Marketplace

geeks-ibs.jpg

The only pure internet play we saw at the 2010 Builders' Show was BidForMaterials.com. One of their programmers was on sight and he took us through the process of listing supplies as well as how contractors bid on materials on their website.

Once you sign up you have access to a database of subcontractors who are seeking suppliers and can bid on your materials or contact you directly and privately.

Even though the convention center wi-fi was spotty the application ran smoothly on their PC laptop and we created a business profile then started searching for leads. You can geo-target searches and there are also email alerts that you can setup.

If this site gains enough traction it could be a real player in the market. No one wants to take a loss on materials and we are all looking for a bargain which is the space that BidForMaterails.com is trying to fulfill.

From Hardie to Heisman: IBS 2010 First Impressions

pella-las-vegas-ibs2010.jpg

This is my first show to attend in person and even though the housing industry has taken a hit these last couple years there was still plenty of foot traffic and a buzz and energy on the showroom floor that was great to be a part of.

I met some great exhibitors and ran into some old friends (Mark Powers of This Old House) and new (Nick Eber of BuildIntel).

Some of the more impressive displays on hand were built by James Hardie, Marvin Windows, Pella and Kohler. Pella and Lowes get my initial vote for best audience involvement. Pella challenged attendees to build a window and they also had a custom lighting display of the Welcome to Las Vegas sign that always had a line for pictures (I couldn't resist).

International Builders' Show 2010 is Here

ibs2010-floor.jpg

Today the 2010 International Builders' Show kicks off. I've been waiting for this show for a few months now and can't wait to start checking out the booths and exploring new product and demos. I highlighted four smaller booths that I don't want to miss and I'm looking forward to uncovering a few other gems.

I'll be tweeting from the show and sending photos so follow me @Charles_Hudson. I'll also be blogging from the show this week and sharing my favorite finds. Click on the ibs2010 tag below and you'll see all of them in one list.

Let me know if there is anything in particular you'd like me to check out and I'll do my best to find it.

4 Laundry Room Plumbing Tips

laundry-room-setup.jpg

Installing a laundry room facility is often the last step in a home, as it can be expensive.

When you do decide to install your laundry plumbing setup, take the following into consideration:

1. It is easiest to install laundry plumbing in a basement, where you can often take advantage of the plumbing from the kitchen.

2. Set laundry tubs next to a window to take advantage of natural sunlight and ventilation for the dryer, which must vent to the outside of the house.

3. Place laundry tubs and washing machines near a floor drain

4. Both hot and cold water is needed for laundry plumbing
