Shopping For Tool Bargains

In this economy (and don't even get us started on gas prices!), saving money is becoming increasingly important--and besides, who doesn't love a bargain? Finding discounted tools can be a great way to expand your collection without breaking the bank.

As a starting point, you can always check with your favorite local hardware store to see what sales or specials they might be offering. After that, you can turn to the magic of the Internet to help you score a great bargain.

One such site? One Tool A Day, which offers just one tool for sale every day (hence the name.) Each tool is discounted a certain amount (excluding shipping), and a limited quantity are available. Today, for example, the site is offering a Ridgid CG-100 Micro Gas Sniffer, normally priced at $257.95 and discounted to $225. Of course, it's up to you to decide if your tool collection will be woefully incomplete without a gas sniffer--just call us the enablers!

June Is Best Month To Buy Tools

Lifehacker_BestTimeToBuy.jpg

For the home improvement amateurs and experts, tools are a necessary part of the job. And with new models coming out in a nearly constant rotation, the temptation to add to a tool collection is ever-present.

Thanks to the brilliant minds at Lifehacker, you now have a bonafide excuse to indulge your tool-buying whims. Their breakdown of the best things to buy in June includes tools, a trend that can be traced to Father's Day. Because so many people opt to buy their fathers (or father figures) tools, many retailers use the month of June to offer tool discounts and specials.

Tool Renting vs. Buying

tools-rent-buy.jpg

What is it with the DIY crowd? Why do we get so excited at the thought of a tool sale? Is it normal to search out projects that will, conveniently, require the purchase of a new grinder, hammer drill or power saw?

Why can't we save our money and rent the tools that are needed for that one-shot job? Most major cities have tool rental shops or tool libraries. Will someone please enlighten me?

Is it actually smarter to rent or buy?

There are definitely situations where renting makes the most sense. You wouldn't buy a cement mixer to pour that concrete walkway in your backyard. And when the basement floods your wallet likely can't handle a trip to the hardware store to buy five dehumidifiers.

Come on, you have to admit that only fencing contractors have a good reason to buy a post hole digger.

But if we're talking about smaller, more useful tools does it make better sense to buy?
